The Cologne Summer School on International Perspectives in Teacher Education will focus on the topic of teacher education in a German as well as in a global context. Teacher education at the University of Cologne has been undergoing a change throughout the last years, both in terms of content and structure. The need for these changes arose from a steadily increasing heterogeneous and global society. In order to do an excellent job, future teachers must gain competences that cannot be obtained theoretically or trained in class by using only traditional methods. A range of innovative projects in the field of teaching and teacher education has been launched at the University of Cologne and give students in the field of teacher education the opportunity to immerse themselves in exciting new learning environments.
During the three-week course, participants will have the chance to get an insight into these projects. All of them are characterized by an international dimension: best practices used world-wide have been constantly analyzed and compared to current German concepts. As a result, new projects have been generated in order to customize today’s concepts in teaching to the needs of society. Topics in this context are interculturality, diversity among students and teachers, inclusion, and innovative teaching as e.g. in the didactics of sciences.
Furthermore, the University of Cologne established the Helios University Primary School, a new inclusive community school that uses alternative time models and teaching formats. Moreover, participants will learn about different teaching and learning fields such as the possibility of doing an internship at a school abroad. They will be introduced to the ViLLA database, a university project of the Faculty of Humanities which provides students with videos as a learning tool. They will also learn about new approaches in teaching Japanese as a foreign language at secondary schools in North-Rhine-Westphalia.The research-oriented part of the Cologne Summer School on International Perspectives in Teacher Education concentrates on different fields such as International Comparative Educational Research and Pedagogy, Ethnographic Educational Research, Intercultural Pedagogy, and Interdisciplinary Empirical Teacher and Teaching Research.
